Japan revised 5 food standards

   On October 18 , 2024 , the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan issued 5 standard announcements, including No. 551 , 552 , 553 , 554 , and 555 , revising 5 food standards. They are:

  ( 1 ) Refined lard standard ( JAS 0988:2024 ), specific revisions include adding new reference standards, revising the detection methods of acid value and moisture content in products, etc.;

  ( 2 ) Establish a standard for margarine ( JAS 0932:2024 ). The specific revision is to allow the addition of flavor substances or auxiliary materials such as fruits, nuts or cocoa to margarine, but the total amount added shall not exceed 2.5% ;

  ( 3 ) Shortening standard ( JAS 0989:2024 ). Specific revisions include adding new reference standards and revising product labeling requirements (it stipulates that the animal and vegetable oil raw materials added to shortening do not need to be marked with specific names on the ingredient list, and are uniformly expressed as "Edible vegetable oil", "Edible animal oil"), etc.;

  ( 4 ) Edible vegetable oil standard ( JAS 0523:2024 ), specifically the physical and chemical specification requirements for new edible safflower oil products, revised product peroxide value inspection methods, etc.;

  ( 5 ) Revise the standard for edible refined and processed oils and fats ( JAS 1424:2024 ), specifically adding new reference standards and fine-tuning some textual expressions. The above amendments are effective from the date of publication.
