Brazil Releases 2021 Monitoring Report on Sugar Content in Processed Foods

On 27 February 2024, the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) released the 2021 Monitoring Report on Sugar Content in Processed Foods.


The report shows that: in 2021 ANVISA analysed the sugar content of 135 samples from 11 processed food categories and 41 samples failed (10 biscuits, 10 nectars, 6 chocolate milk, 6 unfermented dairy beverages, 5 fermented dairy beverages, 3 teas, and 1 sample of soft drinks); the food categories with the highest sugar content were ‘Sweet biscuits without sandwich’ (mean 55.74 g/100g, median 66.94 g/100g) and ‘Wafer biscuits’ (mean 40.24 g/100g, median 41.38 g/100g).
