Codex Alimentarius Commission to Develop Code of Practice for the Prevention and Reduction of Cadmium Contamination in Foods

On 15 February 2024, the International Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) issued Circular No. CL2024/26-CF on the proposed development of a Code of Practice for the Prevention and Reduction of Cadmium Contamination in Foods, with a feedback period ending on 25 March 2024, which includes the following main elements:


(1) The purpose of the Code is to develop a code of practice for the prevention and reduction of cadmium contamination in food, the scope of which includes the reduction of cadmium contamination in agriculture and aquaculture as well as in food processing, preparation, packaging and transport;


(2) The main sources of cadmium contamination in food were analysed and source-oriented measures based on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) were developed to control contamination;


(3) Establishes regulatory requirements for controlling cadmium contamination in the food chain of cultivation, aquaculture, drinking water, food ingredients and processing, packaging and storage and transport, and makes relevant recommendations for consumers.
