On October 15 , 2024 , the Thai Ministry of Health issued a consultation document (No. 454 ) to amend the Natural Mineral Water Food Law, which will take effect 180 days from the date of publication in the government gazette . The main revisions are:
( 1 ) Revise the definition of natural mineral water to exclude water from natural water sources;
( 2 ) Five categories of natural mineral water are defined;
( 3 ) Clarify the requirements for the quality of natural mineral water. For example, improving the quality of natural mineral water must be carried out in the area where natural mineral water is loaded, and important compounds in natural mineral water must not be changed;
( 4 ) Make new regulations on the minerals contained in natural mineral water, adjusting the manganese content to not exceed 2 mg/L , the barium content to not exceed 1 mg/L , the selenium content to not exceed 0.05 mg/L , etc.;
( 5 ) Limit requirements have been set for the detected pollutants: revised nitrite content should not exceed 0.02mg/L , bromide should not exceed 10µg/L, etc.;
( 6 ) Microbial requirements: Escherichia coli, coliforms, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, etc. shall not be detected in every 250mL ;
( 7 ) Revised production specifications: Producers and sellers of natural mineral water must comply with the Ministry of Health’s notification on methods of production, use and storage of food. For example, the use of ultraviolet disinfection must not affect water quality, and manufacturers must also take measures to prevent environmental pollution;
( 8 ) Revised labeling requirements: The label must display the type of natural mineral water and the main mineral types. The warning must be visible in a red and white frame with a height of not less than 2 mm; the label must display the word "fluoride" for the content per liter. Natural mineral water with more than 1 mg of fluoride ; the requirement to display advertising information on the label must not indicate that natural mineral water can be used to treat or prevent diseases, or provide misleading information, etc.
