On 30 May 2024, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan issued a number of circulars, including 550003936, proposing to revise a number of food standards. Some of the specifics include:
(1) Revision of the Standard for Cooked Sausages (Aged Sausages) to add definitions for the cooking process, raw animal meat, raw fat, etc.; and new requirements for filling sausage casings, etc;
(2) Revision of the Standard for Sausages (Sausages), specifically revising the requirements for determining the quality of different grades of products as well as the test methods for moisture and starch content;
(3) amending the Standard for Edible Vegetable Oils (Edible Vegetable Oils), supplementing 15 cited standards, adding labelling requirements for edible palm stearin, edible palm oil and edible coconut oil, and amending the test methods for indicators such as refractive index and acid value of products, etc;
(4) Revising the Standard for Hot Sauce Oil, specifically revising the requirements for quality indexes of special grade products and general products, as well as the testing and calculation methods for salt content, etc. The feedback period for comments on the above revisions ends on 28 June 2024.
