Japan plans to revise food labeling standards

2025Year12Month25Day, Japan Consumer Affairs Agency issued235080086 proposal, proposing to revise the food labeling standards. The comment period is until2026Year1Month30Day. The main revisions include;

1.When two or more external sugars are added to fruit juices and fruit juice drinks, it is not necessary to list the specific name of each sugar separately on the label, but the combined name specified is used(such as sugar types or sugar types);

2.The definition of new products such as "modulated soy milk" and "soy milk beverage" has been added, especially the content requirements of "soybean solid" in the products have been specified (such as soy milk ≥8.0%,modulated soy milk ≥6.0%,soy milk beverage ≥4.0%);

3.For food that is cut and then packaged (such as ham, fish paste), it is stipulated that the shape should be indicated in parentheses after the name, such as "sliced", "block-shaped", etc.

4.Supplementary requirements for the identification of processing methods such as "aseptic filling", "pressure sterilization", "heating before freezing", etc. on food labels;

5.For instant noodles, dried food, flavor seasonings, etc., the new regulations require the method of preparation or use to be indicated (e.g., "唵 hot water," "must be heated before eating" "diluteX times before drinking");

6. It is stipulated that the use of words with hierarchical significance, such as "special grade", "first grade", "standard", etc., is prohibited, unless officially standardized, to prevent unfair competition;

7.It is stipulated that only products produced under conditions completely identical to those of the winning product can be labeled with the winning information, and the year of the award must also be indicated to prevent misleading, etc.
