Codex Alimentarius Commission to Revise Standard for Fats and Oils

On 23 May 2024, the International Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) issued Consultation Paper No. CL2024/39-FO to revise the standard for fats and oils, with a feedback period ending on 30 June 2025 for comments. The main revisions are:

(1) In the vegetable oil standard, add: palm oil with high oleic acid content must have an oleic acid content of ≥48% (as a percentage of total fatty acids); in the vegetable oil standard, cholesterol is revised from 2.2 to 4.7mg/kg to 1.7 to 4.7mg/kg; soy sterol is revised from 11.5 to 15.5mg/kg to 11.2 to 15.5mg/kg; and δ-tocotrienol is revised from 35 to 61 to 33 to 86mg/kg; and δ-tocopherol is revised from 35 to 61 to 33 to 86mg/kg. δ-tocotrienol was amended from 35~61 to 33~86mg/kg;

(2) The wax content of virgin olive oil is amended from ≤250mg/kg to ≤150mg/kg; the content of stigmata diene is changed from 0.15mg/kg to 0.05mg/kg;

(3) The acidity of virgin palm oil is 5.0% (in terms of palmitic acid), and the acidity value of hairy palm kernel oil is determined to be 4.0% (in terms of lauric acid); the virgin palm oil and its corresponding acidity value (10.0mg KOH/g Oil) are deleted;

(4) The maximum limit of fatty acid polyglycerides (INS 475) in oils and fats is amended from 600mg/kg to 10,000mg/kg.
