Argentina plans to revise its Food Code

On June 19 , 2024 , the Argentine Ministry of Health and Quality issued several consultation documents to revise the Food Code, with the feedback period ending on July 19 , 2024. The main contents are as follows:

( 1 ) The Argentine Food Code adds marigolds as edible flowers in Chapter XI of Vegetable Foods;

( 2 ) Article 888 of Chapter 11 of the Food Code, Vegetable Foods, includes palm fruit as a food of plant origin;

( 3 ) Newly added to Article 1398 of the Food Code : Basic methacrylate copolymer ( INS1205 ) and anionic methacrylate copolymer ( INS1207 ) as coating agents for solid dietary supplements in the form of tablets, capsules or tablets. The maximum usage amount is 10 g /100 g. They are prohibited from being used in supplements for infants and young children.

( 4 ) Non-alcoholic beverages are included in the category of fortified beverages, and the definition and scope of fortified foods are revised; the sodium content range of non-alcoholic water-electrolyte supplements is: 450-1150mg / L , and the potassium content range is 78-700mg / L ; the label must contain a mandatory declaration of the content of potassium and other nutrients;

( 5 ) Article 660 of the Food Code, Chapter IX: Starchy foods - Cereals, flour and their derivatives, adds canary seeds to the list of products that must be labelled as suitable for human consumption;

( 6 ) Ferrous glycinate and ferrous glycinate are permitted as ingredients in dietary supplements and fortified foods.
