UK releases amended bread and flour regulations

   On November 14 , 2024 , the UK legal portal reported that the UK revised the 1998 Bread and Flour Regulations to update relevant definitions, ingredient requirements, law enforcement clauses, etc., so that it is consistent with the application and modification of the Food Safety Law, and Comply with EU standards and introduce transitional clauses to ensure a smooth market transition. The main contents include:

  ( 1 ) Some clauses came into effect on December 13 , 2024 , and important clauses related to flour fortification (adding of folic acid, etc.) and improvement notices took effect on December 13 , 2026 ;

  ( 2 ) Definition modification: Add the definition of "Triticum wheat" ( Triticumastivum L. ) to the "Explanation" section; delete the definition of "flour treatment agent"; clarify that "whole wheat flour" is all products obtained from cleaning grain grinding;

  ( 3 ) Adjustment of flour composition requirements: It is stipulated that ordinary wheat flour must meet specific requirements, except for flour produced by whole wheat flour and small mills (annual output does not exceed 500 metric tons and has been the case in the past three years); adjust calcium carbonate, iron, and The requirements for the addition of niacin and other substances are calcium carbonate (≥ 300mg/100g, ≤ 455mg/100g ), iron ( 1.65mg/100g increased to 2.1mg/100g ), and niacin (≥ 2.40mg/100g ); folic acid is clearly defined. Must be added and the amount added is 0.250mg/100g ;

  ( 4 ) Transitional terms stipulate: If products placed on the market or labeled before December 13 , 2026 do not constitute illegal acts under the old regulations at the time, the Food Administration authorized officials shall not issue improvement notices to them in accordance with the new regulations to ensure that Legal sales of existing products in the market.
