Canada approves expanded use of interesterified castor oil fatty acid polyglyceryl esters as emulsifiers

On September 10, 2024, Health Canada issued document M-FAA-24-11, revising the list of allowed emulsifiers , gelling agents, stabilizers and thickeners , and approving the expansion of interesterified castor oil fatty acid polyglycerols Polyglycerol esters of interesterified castor oil fatty acids are used as emulsifiers.

  It is understood that Health Canada intends to authorize the use of interesterified castor oil fatty acid polyglyceryl esters in unstandardized mayonnaise dressings, unstandardized spreads, unstandardized sauces and unstandardized condiments, with a maximum dosage of 0.8% , and the maximum amount of this food additive used as an emulsifier for unstandardized chocolate-flavored candy coatings is increased from 0.25% to 0.50% .

  This revision will take effect from September 10 , 2024 .
